The tallest buildings in the world have intrigued people for hundreds of years, if not thousands. For the purpose of determining what the tallest buildings are, the height is measured from the level of the lowest significant, open, pedestrian entrance of the building. Once, the Willis Tower held first place in the second and third categories. The famous Petronas Towers held the first category and the original World Trade Towers held the fourth of the categories. Much later, on April 20, 2004, the Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan, was finished being built. Its completion earned it the world record for the first three categories, but then on July 21, 2007 the Burj Khalifa surpassed Taipei 101 in height, reaching 1,680 ft.
